this is a proactiv appreciation post.

i haven't been washing my face lately so i've gotten some unhappy red spots. last night i washed my face with proactiv and BAM, sooo much better this morning (okay, afternoon). holy goddamn do i love proactiv. while i realize this could just be because i actually cleaned my face with something, and not a result of something ~only proactiv could have done~, it has been so kind to me in the past that i don't mind giving it the credit.

new shoes! they were on sale :D. you can't really tell in the pictures but i like them because they are a little higher than usual and the heel is thin, so it makes it look like "omg how does she walk in those ~wow~". they fit really snug and they are craaazy easy to walk in! easier than some lower, thicker heels i have. lovelovelove.

edit: measured, they are 5 1/2 inches :)

I cannot believe my best friend got married Saturday. It was the most beautiful wedding I've ever been to, and the only one I've ever cried at. It wasn't the ceremony, it wasn't the first dance, it wasn't even when she danced with her father. I hugged Fred bye and told him to take care of my girl. When I hugged Alex, the tears poured out. I've never felt so happy for another person. She looked so beautiful and happy. Not even having a piece of her hair burnt off from a curling iron or running a little late to the church for pictures made a dent in how perfect the day was. Everything was so perfect and beautiful, and I know a large part of that is because she deserves it. A beautiful day for one of the most beautiful people I've ever known. I wish there were more days in the world for people like that.

Fun fact: if I go to Russia, I can't leave.

My parents and I are Russian citizens, so they can't prevent us from entering, but our Russian passports are outdated and can take like six months to correct. So we could end up stuck there for six months while they update the passport, we might get fined, or we might get thrown in jail. We don't know what would actually happen, but we'd be under control of the Russian government (being citizens), so we'd be screwed regardless. The other option would be to pay $1,000 here to have the Russian passport updated.

If we weren't Russian citizens, it wouldn't be a problem, because we could enter/leave with American passports. However, we are, and to renounce our Russian citizenship in the US and give back our Russian passports, we'd need to get a document from Russia's IRS-equivalent. We can't go to Russia for the reason above, but, we could give someone in Russia power of attorney so they could get the document. To have the power of attorney form notarized, we'd have to go to the Russian consulate. For the Russian consulate to notarize it, we'd have to update the passport and pay the $1,000. Basically, we'd have to pay for a passport we're trying to get rid of.

it annoys me that because my parents didn't have the opportunity to take foreign languages (besides english), they become so sad when we discuss my not continuing with japanese.

in high school, i took four years of japanese and was pretty good for my level. everyone who goes through high school has to take a foreign language and i'm sure 99% of them lose it after that. there are weird placement test issues with my taking japanese further, so i'm not even sure if i can unless i do an oral interview, which i would be so poorly prepared for since i haven't done japanese in a year and a half, and i can't take any classes lower than 2A because my AP test gives me credit up until there and you can't take lower classes for a grade. i would be taking lower classes for pure knowledge, and languages are too big of a time commitment to take for pure knowledge at this point. not to mention it wouldn't even fit in my schedule for winter.

it just bothers me that they consider it such a disappointing loss, that i am ~throwing away four years of a language~. way to make me feel bad about something i don't have time to take right now, nor am i even sure if i could end up really taking? how i about i first focus on getting into a major that doesn't bore me to tears, and then we can talk about my resuming a language i'll have been out of practice with for over two years?

(if anyone cares about the japanese dilemma, it's because i took the AP test, and am therefore placed in 2A. however, before my first year, the japanese department wanted everyone possibly enrolling to take the placement test, so i took it when i was down in socal for orientation. i got 2A. but, there was also an oral section, and they wanted people to come at a later date for the oral part. i live in norcal, and they fucking wanted me to go visit socal just to take that test? fuck that. so i never did. so, if i wanted to take japanese now, i'm not sure if i'd have to take the oral test, and i definitely would not be prepared for it if i do. and i can't just take 1B or 1C to relearn japanese, because i can't take those classes for a grade, so i'd be dedicating that much time for pure knowledge. also, you can only take 20 units without needing permission. a normal class is 4 units, language classes are 5. so, i can't take the normal four classes in addition to japanese because that'd be 21 units. i'd have to take three classes for grades and japanese, which would slow my university progress.)

i would like to share a cute story my dad just told me about a huge difference between the US and the USSR.

When my dad was still new to America (like, two weeks new) he was taking some papers to an immigration office in New York. When he left, he was hungry, so he went to McDonald's, the cheapest nearby thing. He ordered some cheeseburger meal, and the woman at the register asked him if he'd like to use the two-for-one special. She had a thick Bronx accent, and while my dad was still having trouble understanding people, especially with thick accents, he understood her perfectly. But, he turned down the special, because, coming from the Soviet Union, the idea that for a temporary time, you could get something at a reduced price, or even for free, was alien to him. In the USSR, prices were engraved on items. My dad meant this so literally that he said I could probably find some forks in the drawer with prices on them. So, even though he completely understood what the woman was saying, he didn't take the offer, because ability to get something so on sale was too weird, and he couldn't understand it.
